Derby Weekend at Hinton's

Hinton's Kitchen is officially opening this weekend with our new buttertop and cinnamon breads, apple pies, and the pies named after that little horse race in Louisville on Saturday. (You know the kind, but we're not supposed to use their real name.)

Plant specials for the weekend are 10% off fruit trees and berry bushes and buy 3 perennials at regular price and get the 4th for free. We have several varieties of apple and peach trees, raspberry, blackberry and strawberry plants, and 25 different varieties of perennial flowers.

Specials good Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 from 9 am - 6 pm.

Spring in the Orchard

Spring has arrived at Hinton's Orchard! Our greenhouse is full of color with beautiful annual and perennial flowers, hanging baskets, herb plants and vegetable and strawberry plants. New to our selection this year are rhubarb plants, blackberry and fall bearing raspberry bushes, Knock Out Rose bushes, and even ready to plant peach and apple trees. We also have asparagus in the market along with several new Kentucky Proud food options and our private label items. The orchard is beautiful right now because the apple trees are blooming.

Regular market hours begin on Tuesday, April 20th. Open Monday - Saturday, 9 am - 6 pm. Plan now to come out for our Welcome Back Party next Saturday, April 24th between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Seed planting with the kids, and hayrides around the farm. Fun times at Hinton's Orchard!

Winter Season Begins at Hinton's Orchard

The winter season arrived at Hinton's Orchard on Saturday as we closed our market for the year. It is always a sad time as a season comes to a close, but we want to take the opportunity to thank all of you who helped make this a great year for us. We truly appreciate your business. While our market is closed for the season, it's not too late for you to enjoy some of your favorites from Hinton's Orchard. We're pleased to announce that we've opened a location in the Elizabethtown Towne Mall for the holiday season. We are in a great location near the Gap Outlet and Bath & Body Works. We are carrying a full selection of fruit butters, preserves, salsas, salad dressings, Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese, and Penn's Country Ham to purchase individually or as part of a great gift basket. We can also take care of your fruit basket needs through the mall location.

Don't forget about Hinton's as you complete your holiday shopping. Our products are great gifts for teachers, co-workers, and that hard to buy for family member. Come see us at Towne Mall, and be sure to wave at our trees if you pass by the farm!

6th Annual PumpkinFest

Hinton's Orchard's 6th Annual PumpkinFest will be Saturday, October 10th from 10am-6pm. Bring the whole family for a day of fall fun in the country. There will be live music with Matt & Joanna Black from Hardin County performing 11-1 and the Trinity Gospelaires from Taylor County performing 2-4. Come hungry and enjoy Durham Beef burgers hot off the grill and all kinds of sweet pumpkin & apple treats from Hinton's Kitchen. Take a hayride to the pumpkin patch to pick out that perfect pumpkin, or pick from over 1,000 of all shapes, sizes, and colors that are already picked. Browse our market for fresh apples, apple cider, pumpkin butter and much more. We appreciate the many families who make PumpkinFest an annual tradition and welcome you back this year for an even bigger and better festival. If you've never been, make a new tradition with your family by spending some time with the Hinton Family on Saturday. There is no admission for the festival. Hayrides are only $2.00 per person or for $5.00 per person, you can explore our professionally designed 3 acre Barnyard Adventure corn maze, play in Hinton's FarmLand play area, and take a hayride to the pumpkin patch. Recipes from Hinton's Kitchen

Thanks to Campbellsville University's WLCU-TV4, Joanna had the opportunity to visit with Ed McGuire on "What's Cooking Neighbor?" Below are the two recipes that she cooked for the show. One is Hinton's own Apple Pie Filling and the other is for Apple Quesadillas adapted from www.myrecipes.com. So, whether you would like to can some apples for later or eat them now you can find a recipe to enjoy!

Apple Quesadillas
4 medium tart apples (such as Jonathon, Winesap, Granny Smith), peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup sugar, divided
Vegetable cooking spray
1 (8 ounce) package cream chees, softened
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 (8 inch) flour tortillas
2 1/2 tablespoons chopped pecans, toasted
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Toss together apples, lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons sugar.

Cook apple mixture in a large skillet coated with vegetable cooking spray over medium-high heat, stirring often, 5 minutes or until tender and golden brown. Remove apple mixture from skillet, and set aside. Wipe skillet clean.

Beat cream cheese, condensed milk, and vanilla at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth (about 2 minutes).

Place 1 tortilla in skillet coated with cooking spray over medium heat; spread with about 1/4 cup cream cheese mixture. Cook q minute or until filling bubbles. Spoon 1/4 cup apple mixture on half of filling; sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon pecans. Fold tortilla in half; cook about 1 minute on each side until browned. Repeat procedure with remaining tortillas, fillings and pecans.

Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over quesadillas. Cut each quesadilla into 3 wedges. Makes 12 servings.

Apple Pie Filling
(Recipe credit to Paula Varney)

5 - 6 pounds of apples
lemon juice
4 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
10 cups water

Peel and slice apples. Soak in water with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Combine remaining ingredients in large dutch oven stirring often. Cook over medium heat until mixture is thickened.

Pack apples into quart jars. With wide-mouth funnel, pour liquid over the apples filling to the neck of the jar. Remove air bubbles from the jar and add more liquid as necessary.

Place lids on jars and pressure can according to canner directions.

Each jar makes one deep dish pie. Pour filling into pie crust and top with another crust or other topping. Bake 45 - 50 minutes at 350 degrees.

Hinton's Orchard Apple Festival will be Saturday, September 12th from 12-9. Come hungry and enjoy Durham Beef hamburgers and hot dogs from the grill and finish off with some apple treats from Hinton's Kitchen. Your $5 admission to Hinton's FarmLand gets you the 3 acre corn maze, soybean maze, Hinton's Hill, The Corn Bin, a real tractor just for kids, pedal tractors, straw pile, and more. Also for the Apple Festival, we have the Ky Farm Bureau Hot Air Balloon giving tethered rides beginning at 5:00, depending on weather conditions. A big thanks to Price Smith of LaRue County Farm Bureau Insurance for helping sponsor the balloon!

Peach-A-Palooza 2009

Summer time means lots of things for different people. For us, it means ripe, juicy peaches! Our family wants to invite yours to join us this Saturday, July 18th for our second annual Peach-A-Palooza. This event will be fun for your whole family. We’ll have all kinds of peachy treats like homemade peach salsa, peach barbeque, peach cobbler, peach ice cream and more! We’ll also have Durham Beef hamburgers on the grill along with some fresh sweet corn. Something new for us is what we’re calling “Touch My Truck.” Bring the kids to get up close to the big trucks that they see around town and want to inspect a little closer. We'll have a dump truck, semi truck, concrete truck, wrecker, and many more. Admission is free for everyone, so come ready for great local food and family fun! Peaches and sweet treats available all day. Touch My Truck runs from 10 - 2. It’s gonna be peachy!

Summer Solstice Celebration

Hinton's Orchard's is celebrating the longest day of the year with a kick off to summer and fresh local foods. Visit us at the farm on June 20th for two very special events.

11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Bring your family for some old fashioned, homegrown fun. Antique tractors, tours of the orchard, hayrides, games, and all locally grown food from Hinton's Kitchen.

6:30 p.m.
Enjoy a four-course meal made totally with local meat and produce items. You will dine on salad, lamb, beef, and dessert – all grown locally – in the beautiful natural setting of our orchard. During the dinner, meet and eat with the producers of each ingredient.

First Annual Strawberry Festival

Hinton's Orchard will host it's first annual Strawberry Festival on May 23rd at the farm. Highlights include a car show from 11-3, a pie eating contest at 1:00 and strawberry treats all day long! We'll have hamburgers & hot dogs on the grill, but the real treat will be fresh strawberry shortcake, strawberry pie, and strawberries & ice cream! We'll have activities for the whole family and plenty of fresh air, open spaces, & sunshine (we're hoping and praying for the sun!). Celebrate Spring at Hintons!

We are busy preparing the farm for a new year of crops and for the return of visitors! Make plans to join us for Hinton's Orchard's first annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. The egg hunt will have four age divisions with prizes for all. Hunt for eggs among the apple blossoms! We love fall at the farm, but are very excited about sharing the spring season at the orchard with your family. There is no prettier time of year here!

Our trees are coming to life with blooms popping up in the peaches and blooms are only days away in the apples. Our strawberry patches are awakening, and this past weekend our family enjoyed the first asparagus from our garden. We look forward to sharing it with you over the next few weeks! If you like asparagus, you will love farm fresh asparagus!

Hinton's Orchard opens for the year next Wednesday, April 8 at 9 am. We will be open Monday - Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm. Come see us for your flower and vegetable needs. We will have asparagus when we open and continue to add more fresh produce in the coming weeks. Local meat & cheeses are available as well. Spring at Hinton's Orchard & Farm Market

Spring is just around the corner and we're making plans to kick off our season and welcome all our friends back for a new year at Hinton's! We'll be opening on Wednesday, April 8th with a great selection of bedding plants, vegetable plants & seeds, hanging baskets, and pots ready to take home and enjoy! We'll also have a variety of our preserves, fruit butters, Penn's Ham, Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese, and much more. Our kitchen will be open ready to make desserts for your Easter Celebrations!

Saturday, April 11th will be a special day at Hinton's as we host our First Annual Easter Egg Hunt! The event will be free and your kids can come and hunt for eggs in the orchards! If you've never visited our orchard in the spring, come by to see the trees in bloom as a new crop of apples and peaches begin to grow! It's a busy time of year around here right now and we've been seeing lots of you coming out for a visit. Thanks! We really appreciate that. I wanted to take a minute to put up some information related to the next couple of weekends. This weekend, October 4 & 5, we'll be set up at Lincoln Days Festival in downtown Hodgenville. If you're coming to the festival be sure and stop by for a visit. Joanna will be taking care of the booth in town, and Jeremy will be keeping things going at the farm. We'll be open as usual from 9am - 6pm Saturday. On Sunday, we'll be open from 1-6 pm. We'll have hayrides to the pumpkin patch, the corn maze, our play areas, and our bouncy castle. We'll also have hamburgers & hot dogs, caramel apples & apple turnovers fresh from the kitchen. We have a great selection of pumpkins and other fall items, ready for you to decorate your home or business. Make us your one stop for all you fall items!

Next Saturday, October 11th will be our 5th Annual Pumpkinfest here at the farm. We'll have live music, pumpkin painting and the folks from Green River Cattle Company will be grilling ribeye sandwiches, hamburgers, beef brats, and hot dogs. That's in addition to our normal weekend activities. A highlight of this year festival will be free tethered hot air balloon rides from 5-7 pm sponsored in part by LaRue County Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. We're hoping for a big crowd at the end of the day to enjoy this special treat, so plan to come early, have a big day, and then finish it off with a balloon ride. Pumpkinfest is a great day for us and for you, so plan on bringing the whole family out for a great time at Hinton's Orchard.

1st Annual Apple Festival

This Saturday, September 13th will be our First Annual Apple Festival. We hope you'll come and join us for some great food and fun for your whole family! We're going to be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers from the Green River Cattle Company. There will also be plenty of apple treats like fresh made caramel apples, apple turnovers and more. We're getting a fresh batch of apple cider just in time for the weekend as well. We're ready for fall with our corn maze, although the dry weather has hurt it :-( and our kids play areas. A few of our pumpkins are starting to turn orange in the field so the hayrides will stop at the patch if you're ready for a pumpkin! We're also getting mums, pansies and some other fall flowers just in time for the weekend.

We're really looking forward to kicking off a great fall season this weekend and hope you'll come be a part of Hinton's Orchard 1st Annual Apple Festival!

Sweet Corn Festival - Cancelled

We're sorry to announce that due to several conflicts that we can't seem to resolve, we won't be having a sweet corn festival this year. We're making plans for the Apple & Pumpkin Festivals and hope you'll join us for one or both of those! We'll be open this weekend as normal, but without the extras that we had planned. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope you'll come for a visit soon!

Peach-a-palooza

We're excited to host our first summer festival this coming Saturday, July 12th. Peach-a-palooza will feature two of our favorite things, good food and good music. We'll have Green River Cattle Company hamburgers, hot dogs, and fresh sweet corn on the grill, apple & peach turnovers, fresh peaches, and ice cream! For your entertainment, you'll enjoy all your southern rock and country favorites from a great local band, "Barefoot Sally". The fun will start at 5:00 pm and run until 9:00 pm. Admission will be only $10 per carload so cram it full! We hope you can join us for the first ever Peach-a-palooza!

4th of July Weekend!!

Hard to believe that the 4th of July weekend is already here! We're stocked and ready for your visit to the farm this weekend. We have June apples, local blueberries, some wonderful Georgia peaches, Kentucky tomatoes & sweet corn, watermelons, cantelopes, squash & zucchini. We started picking our June apples or Lodis on Thursday 6/26. We'll have them as long as they last, but they will go quick. Give us a call or come for a visit to get these great early apples. They're a favorite for applesauce or fried pies.

Festivals

One of our favorite events for the last several years has been our PumpkinFest every October. This year will be our 5th Annual PumpkinFest, and we've had so much fun with that one that we've added some more. We're still working on details to make each one unique, but they will all feature good food, music and fun for you and your family. We've create three more festivals that focus on other crops that are ready at different times of the year. Mark all these dates and watch for future posts to get more details as each one approaches!

July 12th Peach-a-palooza This festival will be centered around one of our favorite summer crops, the peach. We're thinking of starting later in the day to avoid the heat that is always a part of July. We'll be giving you more details as we get closer, but plan to join us for some summer fun at Peach-a-palooza.

August 9th Sweet Corn Festival We're going to celebrate the end of summer with a festival surrounding this summer time favorite. Be sure and join us for music, great food, and much more! We'll keep you posted as we get closer to this one as well

September 13th Hinton's Orchard Apple Festival Our main crop is apples, so we thought it only appropriate to start our fall season with a festival to celebrate the apple. We'll have several different apples for you to try, and maybe you'll find a new favorite! There will be music, food, and fun for the family. All our favorite fall activities like the corn maze, straw pile, and the corn bin will be ready for your kids, plus we're adding a soybean maze for smaller kids and since our baby calves we such a hit last year, we're going to have more farm animals to enjoy this fall. With any luck, we'll have some pumpkins ready by then too!

October 11th 5th Annual Hinton's Orchard PumpkinFest! This festival has grown every year, and we don't plan to slow down now! We're looking forward to an even bigger crop of pumpkins for you to choose from so keep this date on your calendar. You don't want to miss this one! There will be music, food, games, hayrides, and pumpkins of all shapes and sizes!
